Mother's last Thanksgiving on a tray
Backstory
I will never forget the last Thanksgiving meal i shared with my beloved mother Lola. It was in Memorial Hospital in south Bend, Indiana. I was barely nineteen years old . My mother was just about finished with her struggle with cancer, a fact I didn't want to focus on at all.Our trays were brought in by the volunteer workers, since the regular workers were home with their
families. We ate the traditional turkey, corn bread stuffing,a slice of a cranberry mold, green beans, a dinner roll with butter and finished with a big piece of pumpkin pie topped with cool whip. The meal made mother very sick to her stomach and she spent the next 30 minutes vomiting in her private hospital rooms bathroom. Holiday meals like Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas were always her favorite times. She was an excellent cook, rising very early on the morning of the meal and prepared dressing and cranberry sauce from"scratch". It just all didn't seem fair to me, the suffering and struggling . She wanted so much to live for her two daughters and her 1 year old granddaughter Tami.. However on February 1, 1966 at age 58 , I lost my best friend and confidant, my mother. That last memorable meal in that hospital willbe with me always...
